Barbie movies have been captivating audiences worldwide with their enchanting stories, sparkling animation, and of course, the iconic fashion. Among the many elements that contribute to Barbie's charm, her impeccable hairstyles play a crucial role. In this blog, we'll delve into the world of wigs used in Barbie movies, exploring the creativity and attention to detail that go into crafting these fabulous hairpieces.
The Art of Wig Making:
Wig making for Barbie movies is an art that combines imagination, craftsmanship, and technology. The design process starts with a team of skilled artists and animators who envision the perfect hairstyles for Barbie and her friends. From cascading curls to chic updos, every hairstyle is meticulously planned to suit the movie's theme and storyline.
Once the concepts are finalized, the wig makers take center stage. Each wig is handcrafted with precision, using high-quality synthetic materials that mimic real hair's texture and shine. These materials are carefully selected to ensure that the wigs remain lightweight, durable, and easy to manage throughout the animation process.
Diversity in Hairstyles:
One of the most remarkable aspects of Barbie movies is the celebration of diversity through various characters. This diversity is beautifully mirrored in their hairstyles. Whether it's Barbie's signature blonde locks, Teresa's stylish bob, or Nikki's voluminous curls, every character's wig is a testament to the commitment to represent different hair types and textures.
Seamless Animation:
Creating seamless animation with wigs can be quite challenging. The animators must ensure that the wigs move naturally with the characters, synchronizing each strand's motion with their movements and expressions. Advanced computer animation techniques are employed to achieve this level of realism, making the wigs appear as though they were naturally grown on the characters' heads.
Evolution of Barbie's Hairstyles:
As Barbie movies have evolved over the years, so have her hairstyles. Looking back at the earlier movies, we can witness the transition from more traditional hairdos to modern, trendy looks that resonate with contemporary audiences. This evolution mirrors the changing fashion trends and reflects Barbie's timeless appeal as a style icon.
Behind the Scenes:
To gain insight into the making of the wigs, it's fascinating to peek behind the scenes of a Barbie movie production. The team responsible for the characters' hairstyles collaborates closely with the animators and voice actors to ensure that the characters' personalities are reflected through their hair choices. This attention to detail helps create a cohesive and engaging cinematic experience for the audience.
Impact on Pop Culture:
Barbie movies have had a significant impact on pop culture, and the hairstyles have become iconic symbols in their own right. Young fans worldwide have been inspired to recreate their favorite Barbie looks, sparking trends in hair accessories, styling techniques, and even Halloween costumes. The influence of Barbie's wigs extends beyond the screen, leaving a lasting impression on the world of fashion and beauty.
The wigs used in Barbie movies are more than just hairpieces; they are works of art that enhance the characters' personalities and bring magic to the big screen. The dedication to creativity, attention to detail, and celebration of diversity in hairstyles make these wigs an integral part of the enchanting world of Barbie. As long as Barbie continues to grace our screens with her elegance and charm, her fabulous wigs will remain a symbol of glamour and style for generations to come.
]]>Many people consider these options for enhancing their hair, whether for fashion, medical reasons, or simply to change up their look. So, let's dive into the pros and cons of wigs and hair toppers to help you make an informed decision
Let's start with wigs. Wigs are full hairpieces that cover the entire scalp. They come in various styles, lengths, and colours. Here are some pros of wearing wigs:
Versatility: Wigs offer endless possibilities when it comes to styles. You can experiment with different hair colors, lengths, textures, and even hairstyles like braids, ponytails, or updos. It's an excellent option for those who love to switch up their look frequently.
Full Coverage: Wigs cover the entire scalp, providing a complete solution for hair loss or thinning hair. They can also hide scalp conditions, such as alopecia or chemotherapy-induced hair loss.
Convenience: Once you find the perfect wig, you can simply put it on and go. It saves time on styling and eliminates the need for constant salon visits. Wigs are also great for bad hair days when you need a quick fix.
Targeted Coverage: Hair toppers are ideal for individuals experiencing hair loss or thinning in specific areas, like the crown or top of the head. They blend seamlessly with your natural hair, providing a natural-looking solution.
Breathability: Hair toppers are generally lighter and more breathable compared to full wigs. This makes them comfortable to wear for long periods, especially in warmer climates.
Customisability: Hair toppers can be customised to match your natural hair colour, texture, and length. They can also be styled along with your existing hair, allowing for a more integrated and natural appearance.
Limited Coverage: Hair toppers may not provide full coverage for extensive hair loss or thinning. They work best for localized areas, and if you have significant hair loss, a wig might be a better option.
Integration Challenges: Achieving a seamless blend between your natural hair and the hair topper can be tricky. It may require professional assistance or some practice to get the perfect match.
So, in summary, wigs provide versatility, full coverage, and convenience, but they can be hot and require styling expertise. On the other hand, hair toppers offer targeted coverage, breathability, and customisation, but they may have limited coverage and integration challenges.
Remember, the choice between wigs and hair toppers depends on your individual needs, preferences, and the extent of your hair loss or thinning. It's always a good idea to consult with a professional.
In today's diverse and inclusive world, the journey of self-discovery and self-expression is celebrated and respected. For members of the transgender community, this path can often involve exploring different aspects of their identity, including personal style and appearance.
Wigs, with their versatility and transformative power, have become an invaluable tool for many transgender individuals, allowing them to embrace their authentic selves and express their true identities.
In this weeks mail out, we will delve into the significance of wigs within the trans community, highlighting how they contribute to empowerment and self-confidence.
1.) A Gateway to Self-Expression:Wigs offer a unique opportunity for transgender individuals to experiment with different hairstyles, colors, and lengths, facilitating self-expression and enabling them to embody their true selves.
For many, choosing a wig that fits their gender identity can be empowering. It can provide a sense of euphoria and authenticity that may have been missing before. Wigs become a canvas on which they can express their individuality, showcasing their true essence and helping to alleviate dysphoria.
2.) Transgender people face many challenges. One of the challenges facing transgender people is the mismatch between their assigned gender at birth and their desired gender presentation. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can take time to produce noticeable changes, especially when it comes to hair growth.
Wigs provide a practical solution, allowing individuals to achieve the desired hair length and style while waiting for their natural hair to grow. This transitional phase can be emotionally taxing, and wigs play a crucial role in boosting self-esteem during this journey.
3.) Confidence and Empowerment:Wearing a wig can be a transformative experience, instilling confidence and empowering individuals within the trans community. By enhancing their outward appearance to match their inner identity, wigs help reduce anxiety and boost self-assurance. The ability to present themselves authentically to the world promotes a positive self-image and improves overall mental well-being. Wigs serve as an important tool in reclaiming control over one's narrative and embracing personal growth.
4.) Safe and Supportive Spaces:The availability of wigs designed specifically for transgender individuals demonstrates the increasing recognition and support within the beauty industry.
Many wig retailers and salons now provide safe and inclusive spaces for trans individuals to explore their options and find wigs that meet their unique needs. These spaces foster a sense of community, where individuals can share experiences, gain valuable insights, and celebrate their journeys together.
Wigs have become an invaluable resource within the transgender community, allowing individuals to express their true identities and navigate their personal journeys with confidence and authenticity. By providing a means of self-expression and helping to overcome hair-related challenges, wigs play a vital role in empowering transgender individuals, instilling a sense of pride, and contributing to their overall well-being. As society progresses towards greater inclusivity, it is essential to recognize the significance of wigs within the trans community and continue to create spaces that support and celebrate individuality.

Initially winning a tender in Sunderland, our company's exceptional work has led to its inclusion in supplier lists for various NHS hospitals and trusts, such as Newcastle, Northumberland, Gateshead, and South Tyneside. Recently, we secured a new deal that expands our services within the region to Durham, Darlington, North Tees and Hartlepool.
We are filled with immense pride for our dedicated team and our visionary founder, Nicola. It is through their unwavering efforts and commitment that we have achieved this remarkable milestone. Their passion and hard work have been instrumental in making this possible.

With our proven and trusted services, we alleviate the anxieties surrounding hair loss and help you maintain your unique identity effortlessly. We are dedicated to making the process of looking and feeling like yourself an effortless and empowering experience.
We caught up with our owner, Nicola, to get her take on our approach to hospital support. Here's what she had to say: “We aim to see every referral within seven days, with a dedicated fast-track system for anyone whose hair loss is imminent, ensuring patients have their new hair before they lose their biological hair. We try to prepare them fully for what they are going to experience, answer any questions, calm any fears and most importantly, supply them with beautiful new hair, which is such a cornerstone of wellness and self-confidence for many people.”
If you’re a patient of any of the hospitals or trusts we serve and eligible to receive wigs using an NHS voucher or prescription, all you need to do is call or book an appointment to visit one of our beautiful salons in Sunderland or Newcastle. Unfortunately, we’re unable to accept NHS vouchers online.
We are now also running appointments from both Durham and North Tees hospitals so you can also be seen here.
We can only serve hospitals and Trusts which have chosen to use our services. If yours hasn’t chosen us but you’d like to use our services, give your local NHS Trust a call or drop them an email asking them to considering using us. Let us know and we’ll also ask them! You can of-course choose to pay for your own wig or hair-piece and in that case you wouldn’t need your Trust to be signed-up with us. You can shop online any time or in our salons.

If you are suffering from hair loss, thinning or scalp issues and are wanting to speak to a scalp specialist or trichologist, then you may have some questions. Below, we have answered some of the commonly-asked questions by clients looking for a trichologist appointment. We hope you will find these helpful ahead of your visit.
The good news, we will shortly be releasing specialist trichologist appointments.
Whether you visit our salon, arrange a phone call or video consultation, you will meet with Nicola Wood, our resident qualified trichologist and founder of the Wonderful Wig Company. Our consultations are private and discrete, so if you do pay a visit to our Sunderland salon, then you will be taken to a private room and made comfortable.
Nicola will then meet with you to discuss your hair loss and ask you a series of questions designed to help identify the cause (if it is not already known). Once this is established, Nicola will professionally assess your hair and scalp and suggest a number of outcomes to thicken your hair, stimulate hair growth or other available options too.
Ultimately, it is important to stress that the advice you are given will be completely unique to you. This includes specific advice relating to your hair loss and scalp condition diagnosis, but also you as a person and how you would love your hair to look in a perfect world. Ultimately, it’s about how Nicola can use her experience of hair loss herself, decades of experience as a salon owner, and as a qualified trichologist to help you get the hair you’d love. It’s our hope that you leave armed with advice, confidence and optimism when it comes to your hair.
Of course, here at the Wonderful Wig Company, hair loss is our specialist and something that we are extremely passionate about, both on a personal and professional level. Hair loss can occur for all kinds of reasons, from hereditary and genetics, to cancer treatment and scalp diseases. Understanding your hair and scalp is key to knowing why your hair is thinning, rescinding or falling out, and a specialist trichologist can arm you with that information. This understanding also allows us to help you long after your consultation, by recommending solutions that will work for you in the short, medium and long term.
The other reason it’s so important to see a specialist is because alongside providing a diagnosis, they can consider your personal aspirations for your hair and your own circumstances. For some, the cost of a solution may be restrictive, or, their schedule may not allow for anything too time-intensive. By arranging an appointment, we can take all of this information into account to provide you with a solution that works for you.
]]>When it comes to achieving flawless, voluminous hair, sometimes we need a little extra help. That's where hair toppers come in. In this week's blog, we delve into the world of hair toppers, exploring their versatility, practicality, and how they can effortlessly transform your hairstyle, giving you the confidence to rock any look.
Versatility in Style and Application
One of the key advantages of hair toppers is their versatility. They come in various styles, lengths, and colours to match your desired look. From straight to curly, short to long, there's a hair topper to suit every preference. Additionally, they can be applied using clips, adhesive tapes, or integration techniques, allowing you to choose the method that works best for you.
Seamless Blend and Natural Appearance
One of the main concerns when using hairpieces is achieving a seamless blend with your natural hair. Hair toppers are designed with this in mind, utilizing advanced technologies and high-quality materials to ensure a natural appearance. The base of the topper is often made of a fine, breathable material that mimics the look and texture of the scalp. This enables the topper to seamlessly blend with your hair, making it virtually undetectable.
Convenience and Easy Maintenance
Hair toppers offer a convenient solution for those seeking a quick hair transformation. Unlike more permanent options like extensions or wigs, toppers can be easily attached and removed whenever desired. They require minimal maintenance and can be styled and cared for similarly to your natural hair. With proper care, hair toppers can last for an extended period, providing long-lasting versatility.
Boosting Confidence and Self-Expression
Hair plays a significant role in our confidence and self-expression. Hair toppers give individuals the opportunity to achieve the desired look, whether it's adding volume to fine hair, covering thinning areas, or experimenting with new styles. By enhancing the appearance of your hair, toppers allow you to feel more confident and express your personality through various hairstyles, empowering you to embrace your unique beauty.
Hair toppers are a game-changer in the world of hair transformation, offering a practical and versatile solution for those seeking volume, coverage, and length. With their seamless blend, natural appearance, and easy maintenance, hair toppers empower individuals to effortlessly enhance their hairstyle and embrace their own unique beauty.
Have a look at our range of toppers online here
Integration
Properly integrating a hair topper with your natural hair can be challenging. It requires skill and practice to ensure a seamless and natural-looking blend. If not done correctly, the hairpiece may be noticeable or appear unnatural.
Comfort and Fit
Some individuals may find hair toppers uncomfortable or ill-fitting, especially if they are not custom-made or if the wrong size or style is chosen. A poorly fitting hairpiece can cause discomfort, itchiness, or headaches.
Maintenance
Hair toppers, like other hairpieces, require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. They need to be washed, conditioned, and styled properly. This maintenance routine can be time-consuming and may require some expertise.
Dependency
Wearing a hair topper regularly can create a sense of dependency. Some individuals may become reliant on the hairpiece and feel self-conscious or anxious when not wearing it. This dependence on a hair topper may affect their self-esteem and body image.
]]>Now that we are firmly in 2023 it’s clear to see what’s on trend, what’s not and what is shaping up to be hot this year!
What better way to showcase your individuality than with bold, daring colours.
Bold and daring colors have become more mainstream in fashion, and this has of course translated into the world of wigs. Daring colored wigs can be seen on runways, in fashion magazines, and on social media, inspiring people to try new looks and styles.
Soft pastel wig colors such as lavender, mint green, and peach are also expected to be popular in 2023. These colours create a real standout and dreamy look and are perfect for the spring and summer months.
As for a more natural bolder statement, ombre and balayage are a great go-to. These styles add dimension and depth to the hair and can be customised to suit individual preferences.
Pixie cuts are easy to maintain and require minimal styling, making them a popular choice for busy people who don't have time to spend on elaborate hair routines.
Despite their short length, pixie cuts can be styled in a variety of ways, from sleek and polished to messy and textured. This versatility makes them a popular choice for people who want a versatile hairstyle that can be adapted to different occasions.
Pixie cuts can be a practical choice for people who lead active lifestyles, as they don't get in the way during physical activities such as sports or exercise.
3.) Long layered wigs can mimic the look of natural hair, especially if the layers are cut to match the way natural hair falls and moves.
As well as being versatile and able to be styled in a variety of ways a layered look can also add volume to thin or flat hair, making it appear fuller and thicker.
Not to mentioned these pieces can be styled in many different ways, from sleek and straight to tousled and wavy. The layers in the hair can create movement and texture, which can add dimension to any hairstyle.
So if you are looking for a classic and timeless hairstyle that has been popular for decades look no further than long and layered. It can be a great choice for people who want a hairstyle that won't go out of fashion quickly.
4.) Curtain bangs can be flattering for many face shapes and can soften angular features. They can also help to accentuate the eyes and cheekbones, drawing attention to the most attractive features of the face.
By wearing a wig with curtain bangs, people can enjoy the trendy look without having to make a permanent change to their natural hair. It can be a fun and low-commitment way to experiment with a new hairstyle.
Like most wigs this length, a curtain bang wig can be a convenient option for people who are looking for an easy, low-maintenance hairstyle that requires little effort to look great.
This style frames the face and adds dimension to hairstyles, making them a popular choice for those who want to add interest to their hair without making a drastic change.
Not sure about any of those?
We stock all of the leading wig and headwear brands, all in place. Not only that but we only supply wigs from the very best suppliers so you can guarantee the best quality hair, cap construction and design in every piece you see.
With The Wonderful Wig Company you don’t always need to do these steps as our wigs made to look as natural as possible with very little maintenance necessary but if you feel you want to go the extra mile to be comfortable in your wig here are 4 steps you can take to achieve the look you desire:
Pluck the Hairline and Parting
I know… this step may sound SO intimidating if you have just received your wig, but this may change the way you wear your wigs forever! Typically a wig will have a straight hairline which does not usually blend in too well with the skin, and when you see a natural hair line it is very rarely even. So what can you do? Pluck your wig!
When your dream lace front wig arrives, plucking the hairline and parting is going to give you the most sleek and seamless hairline you can possibly create.
All you have to do is grab your tweezers and pluck the day away! Use your tweezers to pull out the individual hairs along the hairline and the parting to your desired look and you’re done, its that easy! You can do this with your wig on your head or keep trying it on to make sure you don’t get too tweezer happy!
Concealer
Concealer!? On your hair!? Its sounds crazy but trust me it works!
First you want to flip your wig inside out, find the parting and grab your concealer. Apply concealer to the inside of the of the lace along the parting. Pop your wig back on and make sure you’re happy with the placement of the parting and then apply a little bit more concealer along the parting again but on the outside of the wig this time. If you want to make sure it is all smoothly blended out, you can add a powder or powder foundation (in small amounts) along where you have put the concealer to make it look airbrushed! Make sure you take your time!
Don’t be too heavy handed and always apply small amounts gradually. Slow and steady wins the race. BUT you can always wash it out so don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get it perfect, you’re still learning.
Bronzer
Makeup is your best friend at this point. This step is a little easier than the last, I promise. All you need is your bronzer, a dense brush and you’re good to go.
So you have your wig on, it’s glued, it’s concealed, its styled and you still want that extra blend. ALL you’re going to do is take that bronzer you prepared earlier, get your brush back out of the makeup bag and brush bronzer across the hairline of the wig. That’s it. If you’re a bit more of an expert you can pat your bronzer along the hairline with a dense brush and blend it out with a beauty blender or a lighter brush. This creates depth along the hairline and is going to blend the roots into your scalp.
Hot Comb Hairstyles
Now this tip is super extra and is really for those perfectionists who want to go the extra mile to make their wigs PERFECT.
Treat yourself to a hot comb!
This will make sure your wig lays as natural as possible on your head and make some of that thickness go down.
You also want to make sure you’re careful with this step as it requires heat and not all wigs respond to heat perfectly so always check before using heat!
Our Final Secret Hints…
Some final tips and tricks to make your wig look as natural as possible, is to grab some hair products like wax and mousse to apply to the hair for styling and taming. Adding mouse to the root of the wig tames the hair and makes it lay smoothly. You can also get yourself a styling wax to get those loose strands in order.
But most importantly EXUDE confidence! Nothing looks better than a look with confidence.

Today, we are going to talk about tangles, particularly in human hair wigs. As with most things, prevention is the best cure! So, by looking after your locks well, you can ensure that you will get the longest wear out of your wig. We want to see your hairstyle reach its full potential and last its whole lifespan for you to enjoy.
We know that a matted mane is the last thing you want. Just like with biological hair, soft brushing and combing detangles and removes knots. We stock brushes that you can buy from us online.
Whenever your wig is not being worn, it should be stored on a stand. When you go to sleep or switch over to another style of headwear, never throw it onto your dressing table or into a drawer to sort out tomorrow. It is very important to let the strands lie properly!
You should never go to bed while wearing your wig, as this causes more damage than it is ever worth. If you want something soft and cosy covering your scalp, we stock specialist caps for sleeping in. We'd recommend this one!
The most vital thing to get right is washing your wig. Clean it only once a week and use the correct products. We wrote a step-by-step Wig Maintenance and Care Guide which you can always read and refer back to. You can also watch this informative video:
Due to the lack of a blood supply, wigs are a lot drier than hair which grows naturally from the head.
We would recommend using at least double the amount of product that you would usually use on your own hair. Try getting into the habit of applying a few daily drops of serum to your wig as well.
Reducing your use of heat is hugely beneficial to the health of your wig. Always use heat on a lower setting and heat-style it only after washing once a week. When it comes to morning touch-ups, try to refrain from turning on your hot tools!
Just like with biological hair, the best thing you can do is treat your tresses with tender love and care. Don’t be too rough with your wig or neglect it either. Finding the right balance across the board is what keeps our hair looking and feeling beautiful for a long time.

The short answer is: yes! Choosing to wear a wig cap underneath your wig is a totally personal choice and it is definitely not a necessity. Our wig experts at The Wonderful Wig Company have written this handy guide which outlines a couple of the pros and the cons about wearing a wig cap.
Which do you prefer? Do you like to feel the comfort of a cap on your skin, or do you prefer to wear our wig directly on your scalp? Would you ever make the switch?
Pro: Caps can make you feel fresh.
People may choose to wear a cap beneath their wig as a cushion of cosy comfort! Whether you have a sensitive scalp or not, many wig wearers find that slipping on their wig cap on is a lot like pulling on a pair of fresh socks in the morning.
Another argument in favour of wig caps is that washing your wig is recommended only once a week, whereas you can clean and change your cap every day. So, that may strike you as more hygienic.
Pro: Caps can soak up any sweat.
Wig caps can also act a preventative barrier between your scalp and your wig. For hotter heads, this can benefit the longevity of your locks and protect them from exposure to moisture. Dampness has a damaging effect on your wig, hence why we would never recommend wearing a wig whilst your head is wet.
Pro: Provides a barrier for sensitive skin
A lot of clients we see have complete hair loss and therefore their head is more vulnerable to sensitivity. The actual wig cap or base can rub and some adhesives that are used can also irritate the scalp so wearing a wig cap can actually act really act in a comforting way for some wearers.
For exercise or during hot weather, maybe consider a cap or slip into another style of headwear that has been specially designed for hair loss.
Con: Caps may make you feel hot.
On the other hand, some wearers prefer to skip the step of wearing a wig cap. After all, it is just another layer on top of your head so, if are already feeling hot, then it may not be the best option
for you. There is no right or wrong. As we have previously mentioned, this is all about personal
preferences!
Con: Caps may make your wig slip.
You may find that wearing a wig cap, or anything else under your wig for that matter, creates more chances for slide. So, if you worry about your wig slipping out of place, then we would recommend trying to wear yours without the cap instead. This is because wigs are constructed to lie against your skin and not on top of another smooth surface which may be more slippery!
Perhaps, as an alternative to a wig cap, you might like to try a wig grip band instead?
Top tip: If you do have extremely sensitive skin and scalp and you considering wearing a wig cap, we would strongly recommend washing and moisturising your scalp routinely. Also be sure to wash the wig cap itself!

As so much content floods the Internet, these three videos really stand out to us as incredibly important to watch. They provide genuine insight into what living with alopecia feels like. Across social media, there is now a blossoming hair-loss community which has built a safe space around women who want to connect with one another and find more people who they can relate to.
9 Women Tell the Truth About Life After Hair Loss
‘I notice beautiful features on somebody’s face. Somebody might have beautiful eyes or big, full lips, or great cheekbones – and everybody has a special feature. When you don’t have hair, you can really figure out what that feature is.’
This video was produced by Vogue and it collates the thoughts of nine women, who all come from different backgrounds but they have one common thread to their stories. Hair loss is what unites these girls as they open up about their acceptance of it in this encouraging, candid video.
What Makes This Woman with Alopecia Feel Beautiful
‘A bunch of bald kids and I went bowling and I felt completely free – and then once I got that taste of freedom, I was like “that’s it, I’m done [with wearing wigs]”. Swimming was almost like a spiritual experience. My head felt weightless in the water.’

Created by As/Is in 2016, this video follows a woman named Becky Harris. After telling us about how alopecia has dominated her insecurities for nine years, she and her boyfriend join forces to brave Becky’s head shave. This moment is very moving as Harris finally embraces her hair loss.

]]>Synthetic wigs are generally more affordable than human hair wigs because they are constructed using man-made fibres which imitate real hair. That being said, the more expensive synthetic wigs are so high quality that they can even trick the experts sometimes. Synthetic wigs tend to last for 4-6 months with daily wear and proper care. Shorter styles usually promise the most longevity.
Synthetic wigs have style retention and memory. What does this mean? Well, regardless of the rain, wind, humidity, as well as washing and drying your wig, it will always return to its initial style without you having to lift a finger. We know that wig wearers who are experiencing health issues can really benefit from this low-maintenance process.
Synthetic wigs are not heat-friendly but they are versatile, offering many different styles and a large colour range of natural and non-natural shades. All wigs can be tweaked, snipped and altered by the professional wig stylists in our salon to suit your personal preferences.
Human hair wigs look and feel incredibly natural because they are created using real hair. These wigs may last for a year or more with daily wear and proper care. So, human hair wigs tend to cost more.
Human hair wigs offer so much versatility for styling. They can be cut, coloured and permed and they are heat-friendly, so you can use hair straighteners and curlers to achieve different looks. This means that human hair wigs require just as much time and effort as regular hair does. These wigs will react to the weather, heat, dye and brushing just like natural hair does. Be careful not to cause damage!
Human hair wigs come in a huge variety with so many different textures and densities, allowing you to get a very close match to what you already know. You could even try something new. All wigs can be tweaked, snipped and altered by the professional wig stylists in our salon to suit your personal preferences.
]]>By preparing your body for the toll of treatment to come, oncologists help you to survive. Since their aim is solely to improve your health and rid your body of cancer, it isn’t their job to be as concerned with hair loss. The side effect of losing your hair is not life-threatening nor even harmful to your health in any way. So, many medical professionals may view hair loss as something minor and kinda brush over it.
However, after meeting and helping a few thousand women who are each going through their own journeys with cancer, I have found that hair loss is a major concern for so many. As a cancer survivor and hair-loss expert myself, I can say that it is often the second question a woman will ask. It sounds dramatic as I write this but I promise you it is so very very true.
Prior to meeting me or one of our team (many of whom have also survived cancer) very few women step through our salon doors already understanding the process of hair loss. They generally call us in a panic. It might be the same day or after they have got home from the hospital having been told the news they have cancer – they truly want to know what happens next with the hair loss so they scour the net looking for answers. Everything is moving so quickly, they know they have the diagnosis, they probably also have the date for their first chemo, yet they know nothing about the hair-loss.
To this day, every client comes in with a huge array of questions, admitting they aren’t entirely sure about what is going to happen. Even those who understand the concept of losing their hair are never quite prepared for the reality of it.
During my treatment, I needed the facts – hard and clear with no sugar coating! If I know what to expect from a situation, I can be mentally strong and prepare myself for the outcome. I remember sitting down with oncology teams, knowing that they had only one hour to explain everything to me. My brain was trying to process so many things at once – one blink and I’d miss it! Every time, I’d leave kicking myself about all the questions that I had forgotten to ask.
“Knowledge is power and, at a time when my life was utterly out of control, I knew that being told about what would happen to my body beforehand would have given me a bit of control back! “
So, let’s take some time to share what your oncologists perhaps didn’t tell you based on the questions that I get asked all the time…
Yes, hair loss happens. Should your oncology team tell you to prepare to lose your hair – it will happen. So many of us hope to be the exception to the rule and, while it is completely understandable, the best thing that you can do for your mental health is come to terms with the process.
No, you can’t prevent your hair from falling out. Lots of women will stop brushing their hair in the hopes that it will stay put. Not only will this not work, but it will actually cause lots of tangling issues. It is important to brush your hair more often from Day 14 onwards, as this will help release the hairs which are due to fall. Also, plaiting long hair before you go to bed is another great way to avoid tangling overnight.
Yes. How quickly, slowly, much or little you lose your hair will depend on how many treatment cycles you have, what’s in your prescribed dosage, the strength of the dosage, whether your cycles are weekly or three-weekly, if you have a break from treatment, how thick your hair is, how healthy and strong your body is – and more. These are all factors which play their part in making hair loss an individual experience for everyone. If your oncology team says to expect thinning hair rather than total hair loss, that is different altogether and we will explain that at another time.
From our own research and recordings of over one thousand women, we have found that for most chemotherapy-related hair loss, when people have a cycle every three weeks, hair loss generally occurs on Day 17 (Day 1 being your first cycle).
Lots of women experience a strange feeling on their scalp once they have had some chemotherapy and before they are due to lose their hair – you may feel a weird discomfort and tingle that’s quite uncomfortable. This feeling is quite normal. This tingle tends to go once the hair has fallen out.
Usually, the fall (hair loss) takes about 3-5 days. Hair loss usually covers the whole head rather than concentrating in certain spots. You won’t wake up one day and find it’s all gone, nor does it fall out in clumps but rather it is a diffuse hair loss, a shedding that does not stop. Once this shedding starts it doesn’t stop. So, if you run your hands through your hair, strands will fall out every time and you also can’t stop touching it you will likely feel compelled to keep putting your hands through it at this stage.
From surveying so many women and understanding the processes, someone who completes a full treatment plan with months of chemotherapy will lose their eyebrows and eyelashes at least partially. However, unlike your head hair, this doesn’t tend to happen right away but rather a few months down the line.
Hair loss comes and goes. Throughout your treatment plan and after your initial hair loss, you will most likely have periods of small regrowth. Quite often your chemotherapy drugs will be tweaked and changed throughout your treatment cycles this can lead to periods of regrowth and loss throughout your full chemotherapy plan.
I know personally as a hairdresser and cancer survivor a young woman and a wife and mummy how utterly important understanding the full cycle of hair loss and regrowth is. That’s why I’ve put my heart and soul into helping women in this position come to terms with it and find ways to feel more like themselves as it starts to grow back – from hair integration solutions to wigs.
For some of our clients, they just want to hear the truth, and book in for their first cut once their hair starts to return. For other clients, it’s about a natural looking wig and hair system during and after the treatment.
For us, being totally honest, the women who act upon the news of hair loss quickly cope best with it. As much as we want to bury our heads in the sand over the hairloss it doesn’t help, it makes it ever more distressing when it happens and you are not prepped. It’s crucial to know when it will happen? How will it happen?
And, when it does happen you can be ready to put something in place be that a full wig, partial wig, a scarf topper or integration system. From our experience, once a lady has tried some solutions and has a plan she will cope better with the hair loss when it happens.
Our number one goal? To tell you the truth so you know what to expect and can prepare, whilst giving you the full range of wig and hair integration systems available to help you feel like you during the whole process.
While oncologists are the real lifesavers, we’re here to help you deal with the worry and stress of hair loss.

]]>“Can anything save my hair?…I’ve heard about the Cold Cap.”
We are so desperate as women to do anything we can to save our hair – it’s our crown and glory, it’s our identity, and sometimes it’s what reveals us to others as having cancer or being unwell.
As women, we want to keep our hair at all costs to protect our families (especially our young children from knowing what is happening to mummy). We want to stop the glares, the stares and the sympathy that can make things feel worse. We want to be in control of the awful situation we are forced into and losing our hair is yet another thing that feels beyond our realms of control.
“Yes, we’re living with cancer, yes we are living with treatment and yes we’re keeping up a face for work and the school mums. So yes, it is understandable that our hair helps us feel like life is okay, things are normal, I am okay.“
NICOLA WOOD
So the question “can anything save my hair from falling out during chemotherapy?” is not only valid but it is totally understandable. And honestly? Not only is this top of the list of questions that women have for me as a hairdresser and wig specialist, but it’s also the among the first few questions I asked during my own cancer diagnosis, aged 36.
Keeping our hair becomes almost a fixation for many women. They spend hours and hours on the internet researching each and every woman who gives them hope and writes a blog saying she didn’t lose her hair.
So today, I’d like to focus today on the one thing that some oncology teams will recommend for those women who will try anything to save their biological hair through treatment – the cold cap.
Does the cold cap work?
In short – the cold cap can work to help you keep your natural hair. However, the results of the cold cap and whether or not it can help you keep your natural hair during chemotherapy and cancer treatment really do vary from person to person.
So, what is the cold cap?
Well, the cold cap is a treatment which aims to reduce the hair loss on your scalp. It is also known as scalp cooling. It’s a treatment that is given alongside your chemo, so whilst you are on the ward with your chemo being delivered your head is having the scalp cooling treatment adjacently.
In my experience of the cold cap and from seeing it done as well as the feedback from hundreds of women who have tried it, the truth is that its effects are extremely varied. Some women will keep most of their hair with it, while other women will still lose all of their hair despite trying it ,which is a big blow for women who have pinned their hopes on it and not made any other plans.
Some oncologists will not recommend or even allow their patients to use it. Some hospitals don’t offer it and some women who decide to try it simply don’t cope with having it, or they find it uncomfortable. Others don’t continue with it as they feel it’s just another thing to endure or it adds time to the time spent in chemo as often it takes longer to have your chemo with the cold cap.
On average, I would say around 10% of the women who come to us at The Wonderful Wig Company have tried the cold cap out for themselves. Of that 10%, around half of them choose to continue with it at every session, while the other 50% percent don’t continue with it after one or two tries.
Some say that they stop with the cold cap treatment because they find it uncomfortable to wear or because it can add more hours onto their chemo session, and some women can’t cope with that or they find they can’t tolerate it. It is cooling the scalp, so that is difficult for some women to go through.
Others give up on the cold cap because they still experience enough hair loss during their sessions that they want to wear a wig. So, these women fail to see the point of putting themselves through more than what’s needed if the hair loss still is enough to upset them.
As a generalisation, those with naturally thicker hair tend to get the best results. Even with thick hair and the cold cap treatment, these women still find that their hair becomes thinner as a result of chemotherapy. However, in my personal experience those with very fine or fragile hair to begin with are more prone to a poor result from the cold cap.
So many of us hope to be the exception to the hair-loss rule and, while it is completely understandable, the best thing that you can do for your mental health is come to terms with the most probable outcome. When it comes to the cold cap, some women are just luckier than others.
The truth is, we have seen many distressed women who didn’t prepare themselves for the possibility of hair loss as soon as they began with their cold cap treatment. By putting all their eggs in one basket, so to speak, these hit-or-miss cold cap results can give some people a false sense of security.
While I have seen some women save enough of their own biological hair by using the cold cap, many still wish to wear a wig or a hairpiece after the fact. The vast majority do end up delaying their own acceptance of hair loss.
When cold capping, you are advised to not wash hair as often. You should steer clear of hair straighteners, avoid applying heat and colour your hair as well. So, another thing to ask yourself before trying the treatment is:
It’s great if you get a good result with the cold cap. And, if the cold cap was a success for you then it can make you feel far more familiar in your own skin, especially around the house and with your loved ones. However, because of the thinning effects and the new hairstyling limitations, you may not feel as good about your remaining hair when it comes to going outside and functioning as normal at work or on a rare night out.
Because of that, even those that the cold cap works well for, it still might not be a worthwhile enough result. If you’re thinking that you may prefer to accept your hair loss, and not have to endure extra hours on your chemo or experience thinning of your natural hair, then below we have explored some confidence-boosting alternatives to the cold cap.
There are no proven medical alternatives to the cold cap. But if the thought of wearing a full wig is so daunting and this is what’s prompting cold cap use, then you should know that there are many different alternatives to a full wig.
In all honesty, in our salon our last resort is a full wig. For our ladies there are many different less intrusive options, and we would always cover all of these before recommending a full wig.
We do some amazing partial coverings called toppers. Hair toppers blend seamlessly into your remaining hair and disguise roots and thinning on the top of the scalp. They are perfect for ladies using the cold cap who don’t lose all of their hair, but still have some thinning issues.
Browse our full range of hair toppers today. Ideal for those suffering from hair loss, sporadic hair loss or with thinning hair to hide those problem areas. Our hair toppers include pieces made from human hair or from high-quality synthetic fibres, so you can easily find the right hair topper for you. The most important thing to consider when choosing your hair topper is colour, as it is important that it perfectly matches your natural hair colour. That’s why we offer a large range of colour options to make it simple for you to match your hair topper to your desired hair colour.
We also specialise in hair integration. This is again a way of blending your remaining hair into some new additional hair to disguise your hair-loss. Whatever the outcome after treatment, we have a solution.
It’s not my place to give advice or one way or another as I have no medical experience to offer – only my personal experience with cancer and the testimonies of the thousand plus women I’ve supported through their unique hair loss journey.
My advice to all of my ladies is to do some research and then decide for yourself what will be best for you personally. The results for cold capping may vary from hospital to hospital, so be sure to ask your chemo team about their own results with the cold cap. In my local area of the North East in England, I know one hospital here which has really, really good results with it so, if you are curious, it is worth an ask at your own hospital what their success rate is with it.
Ask your oncologist about what he or she thinks of you cold capping? Ask them, if the roles were reversed, would he or she go ahead with that treatment?
“Be prepared. By getting ahead of the hair loss you will be more in control of the situation and feel better equipped to cope. Try the cold cap treatment if you feel it’s right for you and if it is available to you, but don’t pin all of your hopes on it. Be prepared to definitely still lose a considerable amount of hair. Because of that, it’s always best to have a back-up plan and to discuss your options well before treatment starts. My experience tells me every time that it is more distressing if the hair loss is sudden and not expected than if you plan for it.“
We would love to hear from you if you have been through treatment and used the cold cap, please help us help more women by sharing your experiences with us?

]]>So you've made the decision, you either need a new wig for medical reasons or you've decided you just want to rock a totally new hair style. But where do you start? This blog covers 7 key top tips that you must bear in mind when choosing your wig.
The number one tip and it's for a very good reason. Wigs come in all shapes and sizes so getting it fit exactly to your head size is super key.
There are lots of factors to consider - the cap size, a lace front or just the overall sizing and length, but we always recommend getting it fitted before you buy your new piece.
Go to a trained professional who can advise you on the fit and size and also make any alterations for you. We see a lot of people who end up ruining their hair by doing this at home and we also see a lot of people ordering online to be disappointed by the size. So people, get it fitted!
2. Getting the right one
This might sound obvious but we see and hear about a lot of people who just don't look at their options before they shop. Wigs aren't like they used to be and they come in all shapes and sizes nowadays. This is why it's important to look around and explore your options.
One of the biggest options we like to show and explore with our customers is synthetic and human hair. Both are different in different ways and both offer pros and cons so there are big considerations to be made.
Human hair offers more versatility in terms of styling options and longevity whereas synthetic are generally lower maintenance and lower cost. But you get the point - style, feel and other factors vary massively across wig types so always look at your options.
3. Volume is more important than you think
If you are looking for the most natural looking wig then volume is key. We also recommend sticking to a volume that you are used to or the same volume of hair as you had before.
Too much volume or too little volume can make your wig look unnatural and it might stand out in a way you don't want it to. If in doubt, you can always check with us and we can offer you the best advice possible. We also offer all of our clients the option to cut and style their pieces to their exact needs so they are as natural as they possibly can be.
4. Experiment
A tip that always gets overlooked. You don't have to always play it safe.
Experimenting with new styles, colours and wig types can be great for confidence and also a great way to express yourself.
If you are visiting a salon like ours where we stock hundreds of different types of wigs then you ask to try them on! Speak to your wig specialist and ask them what they think might work and you might well be pleasantly surprised.
5. Consider wig caps
You either wear them or you don't. That seems to be the trend with our customers anyway.
It's therefore paramount to consider wig caps before making your purchase. They can add comfort to some people and might even help with certain materials.
But again always try these out. Some of our customers with total hair loss might find wig caps to be advantageous as they act as a protective barrier between their scalp and their wig. On the other hand, some of our other customers with total hair loss find them to be too hot if they are not ventilated properly.
6. Get all the goodies
Once you've chosen your wig you are 90% of the way there but you do need a few essentials to stay on top of things.
We recommend everyone with a wig to get a wig stand. They are a great place to store your hair on overnight or when you aren't wearing it and they keep it in shape and prevent it getting tangled or knotted.
You view our full range of hair essential products here https://wonderfulwigs.co.uk/collections/wig-care-accessories
7. Wear it with pride
Lastly, one of the most important top tips. Wear your new hair proudly. You are beautiful and so too is your new hair!
Once you've chosen your wig there is still more to do but we'll leave that for another blog. You can, however, check out the top 3 things you should do when you get your new hair video below.
]]>
We sat down with our team of wig experts to get some top tips for you people and here we are.
For obvious reasons shorter hair will be cooler as a general rule of thumb. Keeping your hair off your neck is a must if you are prone to getting too hot. If you aren't looking to buy an alternative piece then styling your hair is super simple and very effective. We would recommend a simple up-do, a loose ponytail or a simple messy bun.
Tossing those curls up or aside on warmer days is a sure winner but if you looking to invest in a piece that is not shoulder-length, then there are plenty of styles that are perfect for Summer. Short bobs and pixie cuts are a few examples of pieces that we would recommend, with no heavy hair covering your neck and creating unwanted heat and discomfort. Here we've picked out some of our shorter, bob-styled pieces which we think may just be the one for you - click here to view
We would also recommend going for a lower volume piece for maximum air flow during the summer’s heat.
Whether your new to synthetic hair or your a seasoned synthetic wearer, we are sure you will have heard that they are, generally, lighter and more suited to warmer climates and weather.
Synthetic hair is made from man-made fibres that are, of course, much lighter than human hair and the best thing is that they’re also much more affordable than human hair. Check out our full range of synthetic pieces on our website now - click here to shop.
One extra small tip though. Synthetic hairpieces should not be stored in direct sunlight as the heat will eventually damage the hair. Store them out of sunlight where possible and thank us later.
Human hair is of course still viable in the Summer, so we've picked out two of our best pieces from our own range - Lola and the Mia.
Whilst we never encourage you to over wash your hair, excess sweat on hotter days means your wig will collect unwanted sweat and oils and we all know what that means. A heavier and denser wig which will ultimately lead to a far hotter and more uncomfortable wig wearing experience.
We recommend washing your wig more frequently than usual. This will not only clean any excess sweat but more importantly take out that unwanted weight that will have been contribute to overheating.
Same goes for what's in your hair too. If you using more product on your hair in the summer and sweating more you are going to end up with a dense and heavy piece which really is your worst nightmare. Careful and more regular washing is therefore your best friend for dealing with these issues.
For advice on washing your synthetic wig you can check out the below video
For advice on washing your human hair wig head to: Human Hair Washing Advice
Pro: Caps can soak up any sweat.
Wig caps can also act a preventative barrier between your scalp and your wig. For hotter heads, this can benefit the longevity of your locks and protect them from exposure to moisture. Dampness has a damaging effect on your wig, hence why we would never recommend wearing a wig whilst your head is wet.
For exercise or during hot weather, maybe consider a cap or slip into another style of headwear that has been specially designed for hair loss.
Con: Caps may make you feel hot.
On the other hand, some wearers prefer to skip the step of wearing a wig cap. After all, it is just another layer on top of your head so, if are already feeling hot, then it may not be the best option for you. There is no right or wrong. As we have previously mentioned, this is all about personal preferences!
Don't forget that headwear is another great option and it's probably the most simple one of the lot. Keeping your hair shaded with a wide brimmed hat, a baseball cap or headscarf is one of the easiest ways to stay cool and you can also wear headwear without your wig if you are comfortable to do so.
There are plenty of other options to cool off in the Summer whether it be a homemade spritz or a cooling Aloe Vera gel. Your scalp will get hot, regardless of what you do or wear so having something to cool it down is always a winner.
One refreshing technique that is fairly simple and can be done at home is a simple spray. All you'll need is a small spray bottle, some water and a few drops of witch hazel and you are good to go. An Aloe Vera gel can also be perfect and will leave your scalp feeling cool and refreshed. Remember though that these might not work for everyone and in some cases might irritate your skin. As you'll know the scalp is super sensitive so be careful with what your applying to it and how it might be affecting it.
Another alternative is just a simple anti-humidity spray. These sprays are designed to repel water and keep moisture from damaging your hair but they will eventually contribute to a denser and heavier wig. Maintaining a more regular washing routine will help avoid this though.
P.S don't forget to wear your sun screen! On a really hot summers day you might just want to ditch all your hair pieces and wear a scarf but remember to wear a high factor sun screen. The skin on the top of your head is far more sensitive to that on your body so it's really important that you stay topped up with a high factor.

Like we said before Alopecia affects people of all ages and genders, however, it is more common in people in early childhood or adolescence. There is little information as to why this is but that is the case with most forms of Alopecia.
Approximately half of all people with milder cases of Alopecia Areata recover within a year. Alopecia Areata is where the hair falls out in small, coin-sized patches. Despite this most people will go on to experience more than one episode of this hair loss during their lifetime.
As we touched on earlier, everyones Alopecia is slightly different and it's sometimes hard to find common trends. This really highlights the need for further research in Alopeica, it's causes and how it affects people on an individual basis.
One thing that is for sure though is we are in a far better place than we were a few years ago. The support for Alopecia is growing in the UK and we have fantastic support and services available here at the Wonderful Wig Company also.

How long will it be before my hair grows back after chemotherapy? If I had a pound for every time that I was asked this question, I would be rich! Without a doubt, this is probably the most frequent question that I hear from ladies who are facing hair loss. For so many of us, our hair is our crown. We
feel lost and broken without it.
For me personally, living my life as a hairdresser, my hair plays such an important role in my identity. I just don’t feel like myself unless I like how my hair looks. From the first moment that I tell anyone what I do for a living, I feel that person’s eyes drift up to check out my crown!
Time and time again, I remember when I was in treatment and people would say to me, “Wow, you don't even look poorly. You look amazing. Are you sure you have cancer? You look great!”
That is solely because my attitude was to never let cancer win. From the get-go, there was absolutely no way that I would let cancer strip me of looking professional, polished and feminine. In my house though, that was a different story. Behind my four walls, there were many days where I was bound to my bed. I wouldn’t take care of myself, or wash; I would just cry. Like anyone else, I dealt with pity and worry, and self-loathing.
But, as soon as it was time for me to face the world again, I would have my ‘game face’ on. Whether that was to direct my team in the salon, or head out to the hospital and receive the results I had been worrying over for 11 weeks, I would be well-dressed, and wearing a full face of make-up with my hair immaculate. In my mind, feeling good about how you look is what gives you confidence.
I couldn’t bear the thought of anyone looking at me, tilting their head to one side and saying, “Oh, how are you? You look so poorly...”
I didn't want sympathy. I wanted to be me. Nicola, a wife, a mum, a business owner. I didn’t want to be ‘Nicola with cancer’. When I stepped out of my front door, I wanted to be respected at work, not pitied. I wanted to be able to go to the supermarket without looking like a cancer victim. I wanted to look ‘normal’. Nothing reveals you as someone with cancer than the sight of a scarf or a bare head.
That being said, many women embrace it! They shout about and they feel very comfortable without their hair, and I think that’s awesome. It really is. I applaud every single one of them but, for me, I just wanted to blend in and not look any different. The thought of people looking at me differently or wanting to talk to me about my body just felt so intrusive.
I remember lying on the anaesthetic table just before being wheeled in for my cancer surgery, terrified. Frozen. My wonderful oncologist popped his head in to see me and he just burst into laughter. I said, “What are you laughing at?”
He said, “Well, Nicola, I just had to check the notes to be sure it was you. This is the very first time I’ve seen you without your make-up on, I wish I had my phone to take a picture of you. I’d bribe you forever!”
Then, we giggled together but this was true of me the whole way through. In my mindset, you can get bad news as long as you look amazing while getting it! So, after all of that, no matter which side of the fence you are on - whether you want to be back to normal as soon as possible, or if you embrace both baldness and your own hair - everyone wants to know the same thing. When is my hair going to grow back after chemotherapy? Will it look awkward for ages?
So, take it from me:
Hair integration systems involve blending your own hair in with human hair that has been attached to an ultra-soft mesh. Offering the illusion of real hair growth, this clever design gives its wearer a big confident boost.
Of course, this loose guide differs from person to person but our expert team, here at The Wonderful Wig Company, are here to help you during every step of the way. Better yet, your first haircut after chemo is completely free and on the house! We even do unique tests to determine your exact date for hair colouring to keep every part of our award-winning service personal to you.

Look at your lifestyle.
The first thing to consider when choosing a wig is your life on a whole. Do you run out of the door each morning – so you need something that looks great on the go? Are you going through a cancer treatment – so you are after something that is easy to maintain? Is fashion the most important thing in the world to you – and you can’t wait to play around with plenty of styling options?
By taking the time to think about what will work in your life really helps us to hunt for the right wig.
Balance your budget.
By visiting our online shop, you can see that we stock something for everyone to enjoy. From simple, low-cost solutions to ultra-high-end wigs made by only the best brands. Within that broad spectrum, the prices range dramatically. Don’t get us wrong, a wig is an investment that improves the quality of life for so many people – but always remember about the aftercare products, as they add up too!
Figure out your face shape.
Face shapes are exactly what they sound like: the shape of your face. Depending on your own bone structure and prominent facial features, there are different hairstyles to flatter different faces. We identified six main shapes in our how-to guide: oval, round, heart, diamond, square and long. However, we know it’s sometimes tricky to tell on your own! So, why not visit us and let our wig
specialists put their expert eyes to good use?
Make sure the shade suits your skin tone.
Did you know that your hair colour can wash you out if it’s the wrong choice? The undertones in our skin are very important if you want your hair to give you a glowing Hollywood finish. To work out if your complexion is warm-toned, cool-toned or somewhere in between, just hop on over to our skin tone guide. Again, we will help to clarify all of this for you during your in-house appointment too!

Hola and welcome,
All the myths about wigs circling the internet come from tittle tattle and old wives tales. Wigs have moved on since the 1950’s, but the myths unfortunately remain. I hear all the time wigs look fake, wigs fall off too easily, wigs are expensive – it’s no wonder wigs get a bald rap.
However, despite all the old wifes tales and tittle tattle, wigs are one of the most natural-looking hair loss solutions on the market. Wigs are also the perfect way for trying out new hairstyles, before making any permanent changes to your biological hair.
These are the 8 most common myths about wigs that I get asked everyday:
This is simply not true!
Of all the wig old wifes tales out there, this one is probably the most common.
It’s also the least true, however, you must ensure that your new hair fits correctly and you match the right wig with your face shape and skin colour.
When you love your new hair, you will never feel conscious again. Gwyneth and Keira have both experienced hair loss and remained looking glamorous. Both women still love wearing wigs to this day and they never look fake.
Choose the right wig for you and you will look glamorous.

Trying anything for the first time, whether it’s executing the perfect home cooked macaroons or putting on a wig, will have its challenges. But that’s okay because messing up is part of the learning process. We would never learn to walk if we worried about falling over and as much as learning something new is daunting, the satisfaction from mastering a new skill is amazing.
The same is true for wig maintenance and styling, you will learn by trial and error or you can employ the expertise of a specialist wig consultant. Check out our wig maintenance section on our website.
With practice, you can become as adept at styling and caring for your wigs as your favorite hair stylist. Just don’t expect to be an expert right away.3) My Head is Too Big/Too Small for a Wig
This is simply not true!
Finding a wig that fits perfectly is the same as finding that perfect dress, you need to know your right size.
When your new dress fits properly it feels comfortable, looks beautiful, and accentuates your natural features. The same is true with wigs.
To figure out your wig size, you need to take specific measurements of your head.

This is simply not true!
This wig old wifes tale isn’t true for three reasons.
Reason #1 With practice your wig maintenance and wig styling will eventually turn you into a wig expert, practice makes perfect! Learning how to style a wig will help you transform your wig into a number of different styles, too. If you’re planning on styling your wig with heating tools, be sure to buy a human hair wig.
Traditional synthetic wigs are NOT heat resistant and will melt if you use hair dryers or other heating tools on them. Even the heat resistant synthetic wigs cannot be styled like human hair wigs and our Hair Boss does not recommend them.
Synthetic wigs are lower cost than human hair wigs, so you find that most women will have a couple of synthetic wigs to keep things fresh.
Choosing the right wig: synthetic vs. human hair –
Reason #2 You aren’t going to be stuck with the same hair forever.
All wigs deteriorate/wear out over time. If you’re wearing your new hair every day, a synthetic wig will wear out in about 9 months (less if its longer) and a human hair wig will wear out within a year. You will need to buy a new wig at least every year, so plenty of opportunities to try something new.
Want to rotate your styles on a more regular basis? Invest in a couple of less expensive synthetic wigs to try out new styles.

Reason #3 Wigs are designed to be versatile.
Monofilament cap wigs and lace front wigs are created to look incredibly natural and can be styled in a nearly infinite number of ways.
The part of a monofilament cap wig can be modified, and a lace front wig can be pulled back off of your head into a ponytail, because the hairline is so natural looking.

Wigs that comedically fall off at the wrong time are always an easy laugh in a lot of movies.
Wigs have been portrayed in movies for cheap laughs, showing us that wigs don’t stay on your head. What you miss is that Hollywood and its stars use wigs in the movies themselves and the movie stars don them on red carpets all the time.
Wigs are flexible, wigs are no hassle, and thanks to the new improvements, wigs are extremely realistic looking. Infact, in most cases they look even more natural than some current styling trends! In showbiz where there is high pressure to look your very best, a lot of celebrities drew their attention to wigs
But here’s the thing, a properly fitted wig should never fall off. As long as you’ve been properly sized, your wig should never fall off. Most wigs even have adjustable straps that can help you size your wig up and down an inch or two.
If you’d like a little extra insurance or you are going somewhere very windy or in a soft top and you want to ensure that your wig will stay where you want it to, try using wig tape or a gel wig headband. If you still have existing hair underneath your wig, you could also use toupee clips and bobby pins to keep your wig in place.

This is simply not true!
If you’re someone who has experienced hair loss because of chemotherapy treatments, it’s not uncommon to worry about whether or not a wig will inhibit your natural hairs’ regrowth.
Fortunately, that’s just not true.
Hair cells will grow regardless of whether or not you cover them with a wig, scarf, or even a hat. However, we do advise that you get natural sunlight to your scalp and our Hair Boss recommends that when you are alone in the house or garden, take your wig off and get some sunlight on your scalp. Be very careful and use suncream, treat your scalp like you would a newborn n]baby in the sun.
To prevent skin damage, make sure to clean and moisturize your scalp every day. Wearing a wig cap is also a great way to protect the skin underneath your wig.
This is simply not true!
This is another old wifes tale in the wonderful world of wigs. Many women worry that a synthetic wig will look “synthetic.” While that may have been true for the synthetic wigs of the 1950’s, today’s synthetic wigs are much more sophisticated.
If you’re looking for a wig that will look natural, but not cost the earth, then a good-quality synthetic wig is a great choice. It is however important to note that not all synthetic wigs are created equal. Some synthetic wigs can be very poor quality – so beware for anything that’s too ‘cheap’ on the net. If the price looks too good to be true, then it probably is.
Choosing the right wig: synthetic vs. human hair
This is simply not true!
Not only are young celebrities wearing wigs these days, but your daughter or granddaughter might even be wearing some kind of faux hair product, without you knowing it. Teenagers and young women in the 21st century wear toppers, extensions, and even weaves for thicker hair with more volume.
If the kids are doing it, then why can’t you?
Start thinking of your new hair as a leaving-the-house-essential and not something to be ashamed of wearing.
At the Wonderful Wig Company we ensure that all our customers find the perfect fitting within your budget and give you the confidence as if you were wearing your biological hair.
Always wear your wig with confidence and a huge smile.
Thanks
Nicola
]]>The brilliant trust recently reached a major milestone as they served their 10,000th wig to young person suffering from hair-loss due to cancer, alopecia or any other medical condition.
Our salon is fortunate to part of their network of fitters that can supply and fit The Little Princess Trust wigs, which have been made from hair kindly donated by their generous supporters.
In 2020, we were super proud to announce that we were officially given a gold standard status from this amazing trust. This was a massive achievement for our company as only 8 other salons in the UK and 12 worldwide have achieved this status.
As well helping this great company with the fitting and supply of wigs to young children we also widely encourage our clients and our community to donate hair where possible. The non-for-profit organisation based in Hereford relies on the generosity of individuals like you to provide the service they do.
Thinking about cutting off your hair during lockdown? Hold off cutting it for the moment and join the #LetItGrow campaign.
The trust struggle to get long donations to make longer wigs for our young clients as most young recipients want longer wigs but often a lot of the hair is lost in the making process.
Fortunately for us this lockdown has presented us with the perfect opportunity to let our locks grow a little longer so if you’re thinking of donating then please keep growing. So far the Wonderful Wig Company have had just over 50 hair donations of 8+ inches. That’s the height of two double decker buses!
It was awarded for our persistence in helping the hair-loss cause, our excellent feedback and for always going the extra miles for young people in the North East. The team from the Little Princess Trust came down personally to award us with our gold status (pictured above).
Did you know that both the Little Princess Trust and the Wonderful Wig Company are still open and operating, albeit a little different from usual. As a service provider for those with medical hair-loss, and a supplier to the NHS, the Wonderful Wig Company is classified a healthcare provider.
Our special dispensation allows us to provide amazing hair to clients like Lauren who received her hair from us just last week. Here is some of the amazing feedback which shows you how much this piece meant to Lauren in lockdown.
“I just wanted to say thank you so so much to all of you. I absolutely love it and can not believe how lucky I am. It really does not look like a wig at all!”
“Absolutely amazing service from start to finish. We were put in touch with Wonderful Wig Company by The Little Princess Trust after my daughter lost her hair due to chemotherapy. My daughter is so happy with her new wig. It has given her so much more confidence. Cannot thank you guys enough“
Thinking of donating your hair?
Drop us a message or email us on info@wonderfulwigs.co.uk if you are interested in donating your hair via the Wonderful Wig Company.

]]>Later this week England will begin a national “lockdown” requiring all non-essential shops and businesses to close or operate under severe restrictions.
As a service provider for those with medical hair-loss such as cancer and alopecia, and a supplier to the NHS, the Wonderful Wig Company is classified a healthcare provider. As such, we will remain open throughout this period, however you must have an appointment before visiting.
Our opening hours remain the same and there is no change to the existing, highly stringent, health and safety measures we have in place to keep our wonderful staff and clients as safe as possible.
You can request an appointment online (just enter your details and our team will be in-touch to arrange your date and time) or by calling us on 0330 229 0925.
]]>Today, we are going to discuss how to part a wig, including which kinds of wigs can be parted and which ones are already done for you. Stick around to find out how you can frame your face better just by parting your hair in another way.
Settle with synthetic styles.
Most often, synthetic styles will already come pre-parted for you. Many women love to put their trust into a hairstyle that has already been taken care of and this is a wonderful addition to a low-maintenance look. Do you want your hair stay put without having to lift finger? If you do, you can
shop for a synthetic wig with us today.
Monofilament is magical.
Whether your wig has been made with synthetic fibres or human hair, those which have been created with a monofilament cap can be parted wherever you like. This also applies to those with monofilament tops and hand-tied caps as well.
Unlike with machine wefted wigs, these high-quality cap designs are an absolute dream for those who are after more styling options with multi-directional versatility!
Wait until your hair is wet.
Again, regardless of which hair type your wig may be, this advice applies all with monofilament or hand-tied tops! After washing your wig, we recommend resetting the parting wherever you want while the hair is still completely wet – but don’t brush it. Always brush your wig when it is dry.
Let it air dry naturally overnight and this will help to set the new parting into place, ready for you to wear by the following morning.
Try to flatter your face shape.
We will be launching an entire blog post dedicated to face shapes if you fancy figuring out what shape you have soon! While that post will focus on which haircuts will be sure to flatter your features, we will take some time now to chat about choosing the right parting for your face shape:
• Oval-shaped faces suit any style of parting – so switch it up whenever you like!
• Round-shaped faces should try a middle-parting or a deep side-parting.
• Heart-shaped faces should stick with a deep-side parting for most haircuts too.
• Diamond-shaped faces should always go with a good old side-parting.
• Square-shaped faces should stick with a parting that is slightly off-centre but not too deep.
• Long-shaped faces should part their hair right in the middle with a centre-parting
